Silt and Erosion Control
Question: I am looking for some silt fence products. I need to contain silt and sediment on my site and I'm not sure what is the best option. Would I have to frequently inspect this product?
Answer: Thank you for contacting us! The Silt Fence is a great way to control sediment on your site. It is generally used for areas where soil or sediment will be disturbed due to construction activities. It is not intended to be a permanent erosion control measure, but it can effectively control erosion and sediment for the duration of your project.
Whether or not this product can work in your specific location depends on the type of sediment and drainage that will be occurring on your site. This silt fence is primarily designed as a filtering device that prevents sediment from leaving your site location. It can handle small drainage areas where there will be only a low level of runoff (not greater than 0.5 cfs). If your site has runoff greater than this or if you are looking for a product that can control sheet flow, the Staked Silt Barrier would be a much better option.
While the silt fence is made from a filtering woven geotextile fabric, the staked silt barrier uses reinforced impermeable PVC. This gives it a higher strength, allowing it to control water, high levels of drainage, or sheet flow around your site. Choosing the option that will work best for you depends on the type of sediment and/or runoff you need to control.
Regardless of your choice, it is always important to routinely inspect your silt fence products. Sediment should be cleaned from the silt fence after it has built up to 1/3 or 1/2 the height of the fence. It is especially important to inspect these barriers after each rainfall event, as this can cause higher levels of sediment to reach your barrier.
