Commercial Grade Silt Fence
Silt Fence for Erosion Control
Question: Is Type 3 silt fence the same as commercial grade silt fence? How to you install and maintain it?
Answer: Yes, the Type 3 and Commerical Grade are the same type of silt fence. GEI Works Commercial Grade Silt Fence is manufactured from a woven geotextile filter fabric that is attached to wooden stakes spaced at regular intervals along the site perimeter. Typical options will include a woven geotextile material that features built-in stakes, as well as a geotextile roll for locations that already have stakes.
Installing the Silt Fence
The Type 3 Silt Fence, or Commercial Grade Silt Fence, typically comes in either 100 foot or 330 foot sections with or without stakes built into the fencing. Options may also include a wire back silt fence design for additional strength during your construction project.
Installation of the silt fence includes creating a trench at the bottom of the ground that allows for a backfill of 6 inches along areas where multiple sections of the fence have been joined together. When installed correctly and inspected frequently, they can be an economical effective barrier to sediment leaving the site.
Silt Fence Maintenance
When using a silt fence, it is best to always make sure that the fence is inspected on a regular schedule that allows for the removal of sediment and silt when build-up reaches either 1/3rd or 1/2 the height of the fence. The silt fence should also be inspected after each rain event to make sure no additional pressure or damage has occurred.
