Information on Type 2 or Type 3 Turbidity Curtain
Factors for Choosing a Turbidity Curtain
(New York)
I am trying to decide between a type 2 and a type 3 turbidity curtain. Can you help?
Thank you for your inquiry! When deciding between the Type 2 Silt Barrier and the Type 3 Silt Barrier, there are several things you want to take into consideration.
The first thing you can look at is the the speed or velocity of your water. The Type 2 Barrier is designed for mild water conditions, where the water velocity does not exceed 1.5 knots. Using this type of turbidity barrier in waters that are moving at a faster speed will cause the barrier to lose effectiveness. Along these same lines, you also want to be conscious of the size of the wave swells in your area. Again, the Type 2 Silt Curtain will be most effective if the swells are not greater than thirty-six (36) inches.
After these factors, you will also want to take into consideration the duration of your project, the type of material it will be required to contain, and the conditions surrounding your project. It is also useful to note that both of these silt barriers come in two different versions: a DOT model and an economy model. The economy model uses lighter materials and could be useful if you are only looking for a one time use option.
